Guide to Monthly Billing

Our customers have said that by the time they receive a high bill for two months of water consumption, it’s too late to adjust their use. We agree, so beginning in July, Denver Water will send bills monthly instead of every other month in an effort to better serve you.

Receiving water bills monthly will help customers better manage their finances and water use. Your water rates won’t change with the new bills, but your monthly bill amount may be smaller.

Denver Water also is redesigning its bill to provide more information in an easy-to-read format.

The Benefits of Monthly Billing

  • Better alignment with other bill schedules.
  • A more timely account of your water use, allowing you to make adjustments as needed to avoid higher water bills, especially during the summer.
  • The ability to discover service line, plumbing or irrigation system leaks sooner, allowing for prompt repairs and reducing the magnitude of a high bill caused by leaks.

Expected Changes

Your water rates will not change for monthly billing. You will pay the same amount per gallon as you were paying with bimonthly billing. Denver Water has adjusted the range of gallons used for each rate block to account for a billing period that is half the time it was with bimonthly billing. See the table for new monthly consumption blocks. As with bimonthly billing, the more you use, the more you pay.

The service charge has been slightly increased to accommodate the change to monthly billing. Customers will pay an additional $0.78 per bill for the adjusted service charge.

Prorated Consumption Blocks

As part of the transition to monthly billing, the first monthly billing period for many customers will be more than 30 days. This will only occur on your first monthly bill. Denver Water will prorate the consumption block on your first bill if your billing period is more than 35 days to ensure you’re not paying for water use at a higher rate as a result of the altered billing period.

New Billing Dates

Below is an approximate schedule of when you will receive your first monthly bill, based on the date of your last bimonthly bill. This schedule also indicates which bills will receive a prorated consumption block to account for a billing period that is more than 35 days.
