In the fall of 2008, the Denver Board of Water Commissioners voted to adjust rates for 2009. Denver residential customers will see their 2009 bills increase by about $19.14 for the year, on average. Suburban residential customers served by Denver Water will see an increase of $33.12 for 2009, on average.

The amount of your water bill in 2009 varies depending upon how much water you use. The more you consume, the more you pay.

Why is the rate increase necessary?

In 2009 Denver Water needs an additional $18.5 million in revenue to cover rising expenses necessary to ensure a reliable supply of high-quality water. Each year Denver Water’s rates are reviewed and adjusted to:

  • Provide water for basic and essential needs at low prices;
  • Recover the costs of providing water service, including those necessary to maintain the system’s 2,650 miles of distribution pipe and other assets such as reservoirs, pump stations and treatment plants;
  • Encourage water conservation by charging residential customers higher rates for defined blocks of increased water use and commercial, industrial and government customers higher rates during summer irrigation season, and
  • Maintain cash reserves to cover unforeseen costs like those associated with forest fires in our watershed and other emergencies.

Water Rates at Work

Denver Water’s rates also fund multiple projects critical to utility operations both today and for the future. Specific projects include:

  • Replacement and rehabilitation of aging infrastructure, such as the cement mortar lining projects that allow Denver Water to rehabilitate and reuse water pipes already in the ground rather than costly replacement projects.
  • Hayman fire cleanup and sediment dredging projects at Strontia Springs Reservoir. The aftermath of the devastating fire continues to require substantial expenditures to maintain water quality despite eroding groundcover.
  • Ensuring supplies for the future with water storage projects like the proposed Moffat Collection System Project at Gross Reservoir. In the next few years, customers will see more storage and recycled water expansion projects to help meet future water demand.
  • Conservation education, rebates and incentive programs. Denver Water is on a mission to eliminate water waste and reduce water use by 22 percent from pre-drought usage by 2016. By making water conservation a normal way of life today, we help ensure supply for the future.
