Utility Technician/Sr. Utility Technician/ Pipeline Mechanic

We are currently hiring for the following positions - Utility Technicians, Sr. Utility Technicians, and Pipeline Mechanics. The position hired will depend on the candidates’ qualifications. 

 

Hiring Salary Ranges (listed from minimum to midpoint): 

  • Utility Technician: $15.94 - $18.81 hourly

  • Sr. Utility Technician $18.65 - $22.76 hourly

  • Pipeline Mechanic: 22.03 - $27.54 hourly

 

Full-Time, 40 Hours Weekly, Regular position                            

Location of position: Denver Water Main Campus

Denver Water’s Operations and Maintenance Division is currently seeking four qualified candidates  for the following positions - Utility Technician, Sr. Utility Technician, or Pipeline Mechanic (depending on the candidate’s qualifications). Under direct supervision, the positions perform a variety of laboring and unskilled to semi-skilled duties related to the operation and maintenance of treatment plants, transmission & distribution, and source of supply.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities - Utility Technician

 

  • Place and connect pipe, hydrants, valves and valve boxes.

  • Operate equipment such as pavement breakers, compressors, jackhammers, chain saws, skimmers, tampers, mowers, loaders, clay spades, and related equipment. Operate equipment such as utility trucks, dump trucks, and other equipment. Place barricades.

  • Assist in the maintenance of equipment and keeping tools, equipment, and work area in a clean and orderly condition. Oil and grease machinery.

  • Use a variety of tools and resources including electronic pipe locator, measuring wheel, maps, and GIS system to locate water mains, conduits, and service lines.

  • Carry out the organization's Safety program through job performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Sr. Utility Technician

 

  • Perform semi-skilled and diverse duties including digging, lifting, backfilling, mixing and finishing concrete, rock drilling and blasting, laying and connecting pipe, road repair, tree cutting, and snow removal

  • Operate, maintain, and lubricate a variety of equipment including pavement breakers, tampers, tractor mowers, loaders, jackhammer, rock drilling and blasting equipment. Operate equipment such as utility trucks, dump trucks, and other equipment.

  • Assist employees of higher crafts or skills and keeps tools, equipment, and work area in a clean orderly condition.

  • Use a variety of tools and resources including electronic pipe locator, measuring wheel, maps and GIS system to locate water mains, conduits, and service lines.

  • Use 200 foot maps in locating water mains and valve boxes, conducting inspections, raising valve boxes to street level, and provide location assistance to city paving crews, utility departments, and private contractors.

  • Inspect and observe departmental facilities for missing valve box lids, manhole covers, sunken ditches, water main breaks, or hydrants that have been damaged by vehicles, or other objects.

  • Interact with internal and external customers, contractors, and the general public.

  • Perform related work as required.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Pipeline Mechanic

 

  • Align, lower and install water pipe. Cut, shape and lubricate pipe ends. Install rubber rings and assemble couplings and various pipe fittings.

  • Make repairs to hydrants, water service lines, mains, conduits and appurtenant facilities.

  • Raise and lower manhole and valves to street grade, place shoring and brace boards in open ditches and deeper excavations.

  • Inspect and observe finished and raw water conduits, vaults, valves and other departmental facilities.

  • Contact and/or oversee outside organizations such as State Highway, Public Service, communications companies, private contractors, and citizens.

  • Receive and provide information regarding location assistance concerning crossings, easements, connections, and other necessary information pertaining to departmental conduits, mains, valve boxes, and other facilities.

  • Use a variety of equipment such as trucks, valves, valve box locators, portable pumps, air compressors, safety lamps, and pipe pullers.

  • Use a variety of tools and resources including: electronic pipe locator, measuring wheel, maps, and GIS system to locate water mains, conduits and service lines.

  • Train and instruct subordinate personnel in standard job methods and procedures, proper use of tools and equipment, and safe working practices. Interpret and explain personnel policies and procedures.

  • Perform related work as required.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education:

All positions require High School Diploma or GED

 

Experience:

  • Utility Technician: No related work experience required

  • Sr. Utility Technician: Minimum one year work-related experience or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities

  • Pipeline Mechanic- Minimum four years work-related experience or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Pipeline installation or maintenance preferred

 

Licenses, Registration and Certifications:

All positions require possession of a standard driver’s license (ability to obtain within one month of hire)

  • Pipeline Mechanic:

    • Water Distribution 1 certification

    • Confined Space certification

    • Hazardous Material
