In July of 2005, Denver Water purchased the YMCA and the approximately 10 acres that surround it as the site of a future underground reservoir and pump station. The facility will connect to the Moffat Treatment Plant across the street. As part of the purchase, Denver Water leased the property and the building to the YMCA for a term of three years. This lease envisioned continued park use by Lakewood Park District and use of the building by the YMCA. However, in November 2005, the YMCA notified Denver Water that it was terminating its lease and the premises were vacated in January 2006.
The City of Lakewood held a right to purchase the YMCA property for park purposes if they chose, but prior to the sale to Denver Water, Lakewood declined. After purchasing the property, Denver Water met with Lakewood Parks to discuss the possibility of continuing to use the site as a park until Denver Water needed the property for construction. Lakewood declined due to budget constraints.
Denver Water has kept the area open as a passive neighborhood amenity and plans on keeping the area open until construction begins. Please report all vandalism/nuisance problems to the Lakewood Police at 303-987-7111, or to Moffat Treatment Plant at 303-237-0826.
Future of the Site
The design phase for the reservoir and pump station has not begun. Watch this page for updates as the project moves forward. Neighbors will be sent notices once the design phase of the project begins.
When the reservoir and pump station are built, the site will resemble the other reservoirs and pump stations that make up Denver Water's distribution system within the service area. These sites are tastefully landscaped and surrounded by security fences. All but one of Denver Water's twenty-three potable water reservoirs are completely fenced to protect the water delivery system. After a federally mandated vulnerability assessment, security at all Denver Water facilities is being upgraded. It is too early to determine if security considerations will permit a public area at the new facility.
