Could we store water under Denver?

Take a video tour of Denver Water’s exploratory drilling operation.

Denver Water is always looking to the future to make sure it has a reliable water supply for its customers.

In the fall of 2021, Denver Water drilled an 1,800-foot hole in the ground at its Capitol Hill facility to explore the feasibility of a process called Aquifer Storage and Recovery.

ASR, as it’s commonly known in the water industry, involves injecting water into the ground where it can be stored, like an underground reservoir, and then pumped back up when the water is needed.

The Capitol Hill ASR project involved drilling into the Denver Basin, which is a series of underground rock formations called aquifers that can hold water.

Learn more about the process in this video and in our story ‘All of the above’ may include underneath your feet.
