It’s been a busy winter at Williams Fork Dam near Kremmling, Colorado, where Denver Water is wrapping up the first phase of a $2.3 million maintenance project.

Crews from Denver Water teamed up with construction workers from Gracon LLC. in February to lower a 5-ton steel gate into place from the top of the dam.

The gate is about the size of a single-car garage door and regulates the flow of water into the dam’s two hydroelectric power units.

Originally installed in 1959, the important piece of infrastructure was removed in December 2017 to replace its rubber seals and repair corrosion and wear.

The gate will be tested to make sure it functions properly and is ready to send water to the hydroelectric turbines to produce electricity during the spring snow runoff.
