In April, Denver Water participated in an Earth Day celebration called “Party for our Planet” at the Children’s Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus.

The event drew several businesses and organizations and dozens of families.

Volunteers from Denver Water answered questions and put on demonstrations about how the utility treats and cleans the water it provides to 1.4 million people in the metro area.

During the demonstrations, children were given pans of water that had been intentionally contaminated with dirt, ashes and pieces of paper. They were encouraged to do their best to remove the so-called “yuck” out of the water using tongs, a strainer and a turkey baster.

This was followed by a scaled-down demonstration of Denver Water’s treatment process, showing how particles are actually removed from the water. (No tongs needed!)

The activities were a hit, with several people saying they learned something new about the treatment process.
