Additional steps you can take to reduce your risk of lead exposure

In addition to your service line, plumbing or faucets in your home may contain lead and could increase lead levels in your drinking water. See below for a list of steps you can take to minimize lead in your water.

  1. Use filtered water for drinking, cooking and preparing infant formula. If you are considering a purchasing a water treatment device (or system) for your property, verify it is certified Standard 53 by NSF International to remove lead. Contact NSF at 1-800-NSF-8010 or visit www.nsf.org.
  2. If water has not been used for a few hours, run cold water from any faucet for five minutes, known as flushing.
  3. Remove and clean the aerators on your faucets. Replace faucets and indoor plumbing with "lead-free" components.
  4. Visit Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment and the Environmental Protection Agency to learn more about other sources of lead and how it relates to your health.

Remember: Boiling water does not remove lead from the water.
